The Pasadena Branch of AAUW will be hosting the event which is described in the invitation below. As the AAUW representative to SCRCO, I will be participating in the program which highlights the documentary film "Red Dust," dealing with the subject of cadmium poisoning among Chinese women factory workers.  AAUW CA sponsored State legislation in 2010 to prohibit the importation of jewelry containing cadmium which successfully passed the Legislature and was signed into law.  I hope you will join me for this important presentation and circulate this invitation among your respective organizations.  Please note that the deadline for reservations is Friday, February 10th, so don't delay.

Coffee Talks 2012 presents Millennium Development Goal #2 - Universal Education

The featured speaker, Leigh Adams will share her experiences teaching at the Rudolph Steiner School, Mbagathi, Nairobi – 20 kilometers south of Nairobi on the Masai plains. Here in Sub-Saharan Africa, where a vast majority of children have no access to primary education, the school serves 300 children Kindergarten to 8th grade. About a quarter are boarders; the remainder come daily from further afield.

In addition to Nairobi, Leigh has taught art in Costa Rica, China, Baja, Kenya and locally. A National Endowment of the Arts Folk Artist of the Year nominee in 2009, 2010 & 2011, Leigh is currently Artist-in-Residence at the Los Angeles County Arboretum where she co-designed its first permaculture garden.

"Education Under Fire" is a powerful documentary about the growth, struggle, and inspiring spirit of "Bahai" Institute for Higher Education." BIHE was founded in 1987 in Iran, as a respose to the discriminatory practices by Iran's government against the Baha'i community. Bahais of Iran are denied higher education due to their religious beliefs.

The screening is followed by a panel discussion of educators and students who will share their personal experiences, as well as offer ways  that you can help.

Featured speaker is Dr. Betsy K. Emerick who began working with the Afghan Girls School eight years ago and has made six trips to Pakistan to oversee the project. Her passion for education is evident in a career that spans all levels: K-12 through Higher Education. Dr. Emerick has a PhD in Comparative Literature from UCLA and has taught everything from second grade to middle school to Italian and English/American literature at Pitzer, Reed, Pomona, and Dickinson Colleges. $10 suggested donation at the door – proceeds go to the ongoing work of the United Nations Association.

Pasadena UNA-USA - Coffee Talks 2012 presents Millennium Development Goal #8 GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP

In 2012, a team of four young professionals from Southern California and Nevada spent a month in Chile, traveling over 1000 miles from Arica in the north to Valparaiso on the central coast, staying with host families along the way. Part of the Group Study Exchange (GSE), a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity sponsored by Rotary International, the program includes vocational exchange, cultural immersion, and fellowship opportunities for both the travelers and the Rotary members in their host country. UNA Board Secretary Julia Long was one of those selected for this extraordinary cultural and professional experience. Join her as she shares about her journey through Chile, the lessons she learned and the people she will never forget.

Director of Operation: Africa and Middle East of the Public Debate Foundation based at the Claremont Colleges and student in Teacher Education Program at Claremont Graduate University.

Ms. Mino will speak on her 6 months in 2011-12 working in five East African countries, through the support of the Napier Initiative based at Pilgrim Place. She worked with local non-governmental agencies to establish public debate programs in primary and secondary schools for thousands of students. She works as a high school English teacher and is continuing to develop new proposals for the Africa debate initiative.

Building Restorative International Justice

The evolving US relationship with the International Criminal Court (ICC) has been a subject of much debate. Believing that active US participation in the functioning of the court will add substantially to making it an effective protector of human rights, the International Criminal Court Alliance champions US involvement in and supports research and education concerning the International Criminal Court.

Alliance members Jim Stanbery & Yael Swedlow will discuss the evolution of the International Criminal Court Alliance from its humble origins as United Nations Association-Pasadena/Foothills Chapter project to its success in ngaging US awareness of the court. They will present an inside perspective on the role of the ICC and its achievements to date, highlighting the major issues at play and the Court’s role in contributing to transitional justice, accountability, peace and reconciliation.

Tina obtained her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Santa. She speaks and teaches Human Trafficking and Slavery.

IN OBSERVATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS DAY BY THE UNITED NATIONS

Join the United Nations Association and the Riverside Baha’i Community’s viewing of the documentary

 “Education Under Fire”

The 30-minute documentary profiles the growth, struggle, and inspiring spirit of the Baha´i Institute for Higher Education. Baha´is in Iran have been subjected  to systematic persecution, including arrests, torture, and execution simply for refusing to recant their beliefs. They are also prohibited from going to college (and blocked from many professions).

With a special guest SPEAKER to introduce the film, followed by a questions and answers section and a way to help put pressure on Iran to change this practice. Light refreshments will be served.

Join Mayor Bill Bogaard and the United Nations Association Pasadena / Foothills Chapter at: International Human Rights Day Sunday, December 9th Commemorating the 64th Anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Gil Garcetti will share photographs and interviews chronicled in his book, WATER IS KEY. Mr. Garcetti’s personal quest is to bring world attention to the issue of safe water through the Wells Bring Hope project. Learn how safe water, improved health, and the empowerment of women can change lives of generations of West African villagers.
