In an effort to better understand refugee life, two filmmakers spent one month living alongside displaced Syrian families in the Za'atari refugee camp in Jordan. As the first filmmakers ever allowed by the United Nations to be given a tent and be registered inside a refugee camp, they were able to get a never before seen look into the world's most pressing crisis. Their experience uncovered overwhelming trauma but also the untapped potential our uprooted neighbors possess.
Join them on their journey.

Dear Friends,

Join us for Grasping the Gaze, a dynamic panel discussion of female speakers addressing female representation in the media. Women are consistently misrepresented and, as a consequence, unfounded and false stereotypes arise.

These stereotypes evolve to create the symptoms that women struggle with everyday - professional gender gaps, untenable expectations of women, the objectification of female body rather than an appreciation for the female person, etc.

Seating is limited. You can reserve your seat here.

Girls Can STEAMS (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Sports (STEAMS)

Dear Friends of United Nations Women,

The Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the US National Committee for UN Women invites you to empower young women and girls by partnering with us on our upcoming tea and luncheon: Girls Can STEAMS: Celebrating International Day of the Girl, on October 14, 2017 at the Feminist Majority in Beverly Hills. The United Nations declared this day of observance to increase awareness of issues faced by girls around the world. This year we are focusing the spotlight on girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Sports (STEAMS). Our aim is to inspire the next generation of girls (ages 5-17) to matriculate into these fields, where societal biases towards women often close the doors to these career paths.

Girls Can STEAMS is designed to engage girls in a dynamic dialogue about the stereotypes and gender biases blocking women's progress in STEAMS and inspire them with a series of female panelists who are current trailblazers in their respective fields. Girls Can STEAMS will provide girls and their parents, guardians, and mentors with the opportunity to:

Engage with a panel of women and girls in STEAMS; Gain confidence and motivation to nurture their interest in these fields of study; and Pass on the skills learnt with other young women and girls in their communities. Increase visibility for STEAMS accomplishments and to inspire and develop a growth mindset.

Girls Can STEAMS also aligns with UN Women's work around the world, and our role in achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by 2030. UN Women builds the leadership skills of adolescent girls through quality programs in fields such as tech and sports; improving their ability to influence decisions that impact their lives at all levels. Empowering women and girls has a multiplier effect, and helps to drive up economic growth and development across the world. To learn more, please visit the UN Women.

The Girls Can STEAMS Sponsorship deck is enclosed. Your sponsorship will help ensure that girls have access to this event free of charge, as we believe girls' persistence and resilience in STEAMS will translate their interest into meaningful careers. USNC L.A. is a charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (tax ID number 460589765), and all donations are tax deductible.

I look forward to speaking with you about this important event.

Kind Regards,
Cathy Hillman
